FLUMP Case History and Testimonial - Municipal

Application: Solids removal from primary settling basins, Kenneth A. Dorr, Assistant Superintendent
Hanahan Water Treatment Plant, Commissioners of Public Works, City of Charleston, South Carolina

This letter is to inform you of our success using SRS Crisafulli standard duty flumps to remove settled solids from two of our primary settlings basins at the Hanahan Water Treatment Plant. The two basins were built around 1904 and had no provisions for removal of settled solids other than draining the entire contents. These basins contain approximately six million gallons each and produce twenty-two million gallons of treated water per day each. The draining of either of these units every four months caused immense loading problems for our solids handling facility, not to mention the loss of a major portion of our water production capacity. This often occurred during peak demand periods when volume and water quality were critical.

We began looking at sludge dredges but were very cautious of cutter heads that might disturb the settled solids blanket affecting water quality. Our goal was simple. Remove the solids on a continuous basis without affecting water quality and keep both basins in service while this was being performed.

We purchased a standard duty flump and removed and replaced the cutter head with a siphon manifold. We were able to remove solids at a rate of 300 to 500 gallons per minute on a daily basis without affecting water quality. Shortly, we purchased a second flump and made the same modification. The use of these two units has allowed us to solve two major problems at the Hanahan Water Treatment Plant - (a) keeping the two major basins in service while we remove solids on a continuous basis, and (b) eliminating a frequent solids loading problem enabling our solids handling facility to function as designed without overload. Now, with the use of the modified standard duty FLUMPS, we only drain the basins annually for a scheduled routine cleaning and maintenance.

We have been very pleased with the service that these units have provided and would recommend them to anyone having a similar problem.

August 2007. A major Canadian mining company purchased four Crisafulli FLUMP dredges to replace its former pond cleaning methods (manually hosing solids to a sump pump) and reported that the operation of the FLUMPs exceeds expectations; the FLUMPs work very well and remove lots of solids; the FLUMPs perform much faster and more easily than the former method.

The mining company made the following comments about Crisafulli product quality and customer service - the FLUMP dredges were delivered per specifications, and in good condition; the FLUMPs were good quality and good value, performed as expected and met the customer’s needs; the Crisafulli sales staff was knowledgeable about the dredges, provided adequate technical information, and Crisafulli’s Operations & Maintenance Manuals contained adequate parts/service information.

The customer said that in its buying decision these factors were important or very important - the FLUMPs performance, product features, overall quality of the product, Crisafulli’s brand reputation, and availability of after-sale service and support, and its comparisons of the Crisafulli FLUMPs to other brands. The customer rated these aspects of Crisafulli’s customer service as excellent – employee product knowledge, ease of purchasing and ordering, and ease of payment.

Ethan V. Howard III, Forester, Manchester Water Works, Manchester, NH. December 26, 2000

"We would like to thank you for your wonderful flump. We have been dealing with our wet sludge lagoon for many years and have not always been totally successful. We found your system to be of excellent design and robust construction. The control system is direct and easy to understand.

"I must say we were a little apprehensive about renting a machine, sight unseen, from the wilds of Montana, but the flump has exceeded our expectations. The setup diagrams were most helpful; however, the best part was that you were just a phone call away to answer the few questions we did have.

"From beginning to end, you, your machine and the people who work for you are clearly first rate. We are looking forward to purchasing a sludge pump system and yours is certainly our first choice."

FLUMP Testimonial

"I really like the remote-control aspect of the unit. We can just have an operator sitting up here on the shore, out of the sludge, operating in a very clean environment."

"An option that we purchased for the system is the rail traverse system. We're very pleased with it; it's taken three-quarters of the work away from our dredge operator. With the touch of a button he can move it (the dredge) from one side to the other (of our lined lagoon) without even moving a step; very convenient. I wouldn't order the dredge without the rail traverse system."

"It's real easy for the operator to schedule about five (5) to ten (10) minutes once a week. That's about all the maintenance that's required." "This little electric dredge is light enough where we don't have to hire a crane to move it from lagoon to lagoon. We can rent an extended-boom forklift and get it out ourselves, instead of having to rent an expensive crane." "I'd recommend the FLUMP to most anybody. The product itself is built very well. Our new piece of equipment is doing everything that we were promised it would do. You bet! We like this Crisafulli dredge."

Morgan McCutcheon of IMERYS Kaolin Mine, Sandersville, GA, First Anniversary Update - September 23, 2003

"1st year Net Profits from the FLUMP operation dredging one of our kaolin lagoons were approximately twice our cost in the FLUMP. Current yield: 146 Dry Tons Per Day and 300,000 – 400,000 Gallons Per Day of Re-Use Water. We achieved 108% of first year production Goal. Our initial goal of 5% Waste Slurry into our “Blunger” blend is currently running well ahead at 15% and is only limited by the plant’s current filtering system. The factor is based on the residual salts created by 30 years of Alum flocculant. At the current rate of production the FLUMP Slurry Removal System will produce an annual dollar savings of approximately four times our cost in the FLUMP."

FLUMP Case History and Testimonial

Application: Dredging settled rendering sludge from discharge ponds.
Customer: Griffin Industries, Inc.
Contacts: Windel Stracener, Director of Operations, Michael Grosskopf, Special Projects Manager.
Type of Facility: Rendering Plant.

Griffin Industries uses its Crisafulli FLUMP on a rotating basis to dredge and manage settles wastes at multiple sites. The 4” Severe Duty FLUMP has foam-filled modular polyethylene pontoons and coal tar epoxy coating throughout. The FLUMP dredge is operated manually from an on-shore control panel with a hard-wire remote contol capable of giving commands from up to 400 feet away. The Crisafulli FLUMP is transported from site to site on an as-needed basis. In addition to the controls the system consists of a 75 HP Crisafulli slurry pump, floating discharge piping and a two-post manual cable traverse system. The nature of the sludge is similar to a thin tar and the FLUMP has been successful removing up to 18” of settled sludge in a single pass. Pump on/off speed and direction, traverse speed and direction and dredge cutterhead depth make for a versatile and highly productive dredge operation.
